Seems obvious that a 32cc, 145 MPH blower is a small unit. I’ve seen some advertising copy, though, that would have you believe otherwise. Just want to set the record straight on that point.
I researched blowers for a week or so before purchasing the Troy-Bilt. Picked it up at a big-box store for $219.00 – a respectable deal. The next one on my short list (Husqvarna) would have set me back another 100 bucks. Although the Husky had a 51cc engine and higher air speed and volume, I decided that I just didn’t need the extra power – or at least not often enough to justify the cost and extra weight.
My requirements are pretty modest – a little less than an acre of land, with a whole lot of hardwood trees. Normally, it isn’t a problem keeping the leaves mulched down as they fall, but this year was different. All our trees lost their leaves within a two-week period – while it rained every other day. What a mess! Needless to say, the mower couldn’t handle that job.
So I bought this little blower to break up the packed, wet leaves enough to dry out the ground to finish up with the mower. It took several hours, but the Troy-Bilt did a bang-up job. I could have finished much faster with a wheel-blower, but then it would be sitting in my garage for who knows how long after that. I think I struck a good compromise here.
Assembly was a snap, although I’m no rookie at this sort of thing. Can’t imagine that it would take anyone more than one half-hour to assemble. Put in the pre-measured oil (nice touch), fill the gas tank, and pull the cord.
Mine started on the second pull, and ran smoothly with no smoke or smell. It’s a tad noisy for such a small engine, but not enough to be a deal-breaker. Noise tolerance is subjective anyway – your mileage may vary. After 15 minutes of use, you pretty much get used to the noise level. Any longer than 15 minutes and I’d recommend muffs, though – just to be safe.
Was delighted to discover how lightweight the unit was. I’m about 170 lbs, but my back has seen better days. The unit is easy to lift up and sling on your shoulder. My 115 lb wife could easily handle this blower. The suspension looks rather primative, but actually does a great job of distributing the weight of the machine. No problem with my back at all after several hours of use. Vibration isn’t an issue at all, probably due to the 4-stroke engine. Good to know if you plan to use it constantly.
Ah, but I can’t neglect the single feature that really sold me on this blower – the 4-stroke engine. After using it, I can easily overlook the machine’s other shortcomings (which isn’t a long list). No pre-mixing and little vibration are the two biggies. And, even though it’s an overhead valve engine, there is negligible noise from the internals. Seems very well-built, and that suggests reliability. Time will tell, but my first impression leads me to believe that I’ll have this puppy for a long time.
Only con worth mentioning is the same one others have posted. The engine seems to be trimmed for low noise, not max power. I feel that the little engine has much more to offer than the factory tuning suggests. That little extra push when you mash the throttle often comes in mighty handy during those tough jobs. Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars.
All in all, I’d recommend this unit to anyone in the market – long as you understand it’s limitations. This is a weekend warrior model – but it does that job VERY well. At 219 bucks or less, you won’t find another model that’s close.
“Good unit, a little underpowered” 2009-10-17

This is a good entry-level backpack leaf blower. For $220, it is way cheaper than the $400-$500 commercial units. The blower itself looks to be really good construction. I have a Troy-Bilt 4-cycle weed wacker, and love it. I unpacked the leaf blower, twisted the tubes together, and it started on the first pull. The tubes are a little difficult to twist together, but if you’re having a tough time with two particular sections, try switching up the order you install. This seemed to help for me.
The operation of blower works well. I have fairly long arms, so the positioning of the trigger is perfect for me, but if you’re particularly short, you might find the trigger is a little farther away than you prefer…however, I think this will be the case with any blower.
I agree with another reviewer about the governor…I’m a little bit underwhelmed by the power, and it’s because the governor is set pretty low. I know these engines have a peak RPM, but I feel that the governor could easily be adjusted to run at least a 50% higher RPM, and it would produce way more air. I wish I knew if these governors were adjustable somehow. I think you’d have to take the carb apart and mess around with the governor springs. If someone knows how to do this, please post! Thanks

Very nice 4 stroke blower. Starts great, fired right up first pull out of the box. Assembly was easy. I did slow the idle down a little bit (personal preference, not necessary). Very comfortable, and a good price. I would recommend it

This machine rocks. This is the first 4 stroke leaf blower I’ve owned and I’ll never own a two stroke ever again. This unit is much quieter than a 2 stroke and has much less vibration. It always starts within the second or third pull. Airflow is more than adequate for a typical homeowner. The backpack unit is comfortable (I’m 5′7″ 170 lbs) and the unit is not heavy. At this price ($230), no homeowner should should waste their time with the hassle of mixing oil and gas. Can’t recommend this enough.
UPDATE 22OCT09: Here’s a design recommendation for Troy-Bilt. There should be a handle on top of the machine so that it is easier to hold the machine in place when pulling the starter cord. What I would do is simply change the air duct to add a handle.
