I was very disappointed with this unit for the fact that it did not have text to voice instructions for when and where to turn. Rather than voice it give a “ding” sound that indicate when to turn. It has no lane change guidance. I was very annoyed trying to follow direction with this.

The only good things with this unit were the facts that it acquired and lock in satellite very fast, quick route correction, great touch screen. All these pros did not outweigh the con mentioned earlier.

Amazon was very good with return policy. Now I am still searching for my ideal gps.

I would not buy this product again. I had to pay the shipping for the update. The map that it came with did not have the local WalMart which has been there for 10 years. You can not update it on line, either.

Before I purchased RoadMate 1400, I had a Garmin Nuvi 200W which had problem after less than one year. Compare to Nuvi 200W, RoadMate 1400 is much quicker to get connected to the satellites — after I turn it on, it almost instantly gets the signal and gives the direction. Entering an address is also much easlier, thanks to the address finder assistance. The voice instructions are clear and adaquate, and I like the chime that announces the approching of the turning point.

My only complain is the age of the map (3rd quarter of 2007). However Magellan will send me the 2009 Spring Map update for free (paid $10 SH) since I called them within 30 days of purchase. Calling to Magellan support was always answered quickly and the support persons were friendly and knowledgible.

I updated firmware to 3.12 and now am waiting to get the updated map.

– The 2009 Spring Map update (SD card) was delivered in an express mail yesterday. Replaced the old SD card and reseted the GPS — now the map is up to date.
