“Very good, not pefect” 2009-10-29
By G. Litwinski (Midland, MI United States)
Got it for as hand-held 4-stroke backup for my Echo backpack when that is too much trouble to use.

Starts INSTANTLY with a partial pull. A pleasure to start compared with mass-market 2-stroke blowers.

Off switch poorly located, you can turn it off by accident, easily.

Engine noise is much lower frequency than a 2-stroke and engine seems to operate at low rpm vs. a 2-stroke. It is NOT quiet, you still need headphones.

Must have a big fly-wheel as when you rotatate it, effort is significantly greater than other hand-helds I have used.

Adequate power. The slow turning engine makes you think it is pushing less air than it really is. Nothing approaching a backpack unit, though.

Light weight. Comfortable handle.

Box says warranty is 3 years. Owners manual inside says 1 year as does Makita’s web site. Warning: keep the box or at least the warranty statement on it!

Oil changes every 10 hours required.

Manual was clearly written by someone who is not very good with English language. Kind of Micky Mouse for Makita to do that. Hey Makita, next time send it to me for proofing…I’ll do it for free.

Nice high quality unit and a pleasure to use, but a high quality (Stihl, Echo) 2-stroke will be just as easy to start, cost a little less, weigh less, and probably be more powerful. But it will be more shrill in operation. It is a good buy at one-seventy-five or less, questionable above that.

“Makita BHX2500″ 2009-08-20
By Greasy (Houston)
I received the Makita BHX2500 today and was very pleased with the promptness of Amazon’s processing of my order. My last blower was 2 cycle and finally kicked the bucket after 8 years of weekend only use (Craftsman). I have a Makita weed whacker that is pushing 10 years old and still works like a champ, so I decided to go with this 4 cycle blower for the benefit of no oil mixing and a more quiet operation. This Makita is much quieter than my old blower. I like the throttle action of the trigger and the fact that it idles very smoothly when you are not accelerating.
There is one thing mentioned in a previous review that warrants repeating again. There was not sufficient oil in the crankcase of this blower out of the box. I had to add around a half cup to get it to what I consider a safe reading, so beware. I wonder how many new owners will fire theirs up without enough oil in it. Speaking of firing up, this unit started on the first pull.
I like it!

Cheers!

“Great but buzzy blower” 2009-07-03
By Bruce Artwick (Champaign, IL)
Plenty of power for most jobs, starts 1st or 2nd pull, no long cord needed to clear 1000′ drive through the woods as electric blower needed, and most of all, no 2-stroke smoke odor over clothing when done. Fairly quiet too (still use ear protectors though). Only shortcoming is the vibration. Acceptable, but the most I’ve ever seen on a blower, and need to switch hands more often than others. Weird gyroscopic action when turning it too, but more entertaining than a problem. Still my favorite blower though.

“A Pleasure to Use” 2009-02-20
By M. Coleman
I’ve owned this blower for a couple of months now. I purchased it as a replacement for my old electric blower. It has plenty of power for my suburban needs. It’s also quiet and runs on regular gas (no mixing gas and oil like a 2 stroke). All of these attributes are great, but the really great thing is that it starts reliably after 1 or 2 pulls just like my trusty Honda mower. Compared to the 2 strokes that I have dealt with the Robin 4 stroke in this blower is a real pleasure to work with. I would easily pay $50 extra to have the 4 stroke in this Makita. I wish their 4 stroke string trimmer was a bit cheaper. I would trade up and ditch my old Echo 2 stroke in a heartbeat if it were close to the price of this blower.

“Nice blower” 2008-02-29
I have had this same blower for over a year now. I found that three companies sell this blower: Makita (blue), John Deere (yellow) and Dolmar (red) …. I have the Dolmar. The specs where just a little different (weight and air speed) for the Dolmar and the price was right (around $175 if I remember correctly). This is a very good machine with plenty of power and is easily started. The on/off switch on the top of the handle is positioned in such a way that I often turn it off during use when I don’t intend to. I am also conscience of it being a 4-stroke engine and am careful of the position I run it in. With a crankcase filled with oil, I don’t hold it upside down or at an odd angle that will allow the crank to run out of the oil …. this mindset is different than that used when running a 2-stroke blower.
